What you need to know about drainage.
Retaining wall drainage is the single most important factor in how long a wall lasts. In Surrey's climate, a wall without proper drainage will eventually fail regardless of the material it's built from. The mechanism is hydrostatic pressure: rainwater saturates the soil behind the wall, builds pressure against the face, and slowly pushes the wall forward. You see the result as leaning, cracking, or block separation. The wall looks like it's failing structurally when the real failure was the drainage that should have been built behind it on day one.
A proper retaining wall drainage system has several components working together: free-draining clear crush aggregate placed in the void behind the wall, a filter fabric on the soil side to keep fines from migrating into the drainage stone, a perforated drain pipe at the base of the drainage stone running the full wall length, and a daylight point where that pipe exits to an actual discharge location, not just into surrounding soil. Weeping tile, French drain, and drainage chimney are all terms for variations of this same assembly. The critical requirement in Surrey's climate is that the drain pipe actually reaches daylight somewhere water can go and flow away from the wall.
Retaining wall waterproofing is a separate but related scope. On concrete and solid masonry walls, we apply a rubberized waterproofing membrane to the soil-side face before backfilling. This prevents water from migrating through the wall material itself and causing efflorescence, staining, or freeze-thaw degradation. Drainage and waterproofing together are standard practice on concrete retaining walls. Drainage alone is sufficient for segmental block and stone walls where the face is not a continuous barrier and water can breathe through the joints.
